Hermie Housekeeping

Crabitat maintenance is easy, but a daily responsibility. The good news is that hermit crabs don’t make stinky messes, although they have been known to bury food under the substrate and forget about it. Moldy food and stagnant water can cause health problems for your crabs, so take time every day to inspect the tank and tidy up.

If you’re going on vacation and can’t take care of your crabs, show a reliable friend or relative how to do it before you leave. Sometimes written instructions aren’t clear enough (especially if the person has never kept hermits), and your crabs may suffer if they are improperly tended to.

Daily cleaning (or tidying) of the crabitat requires about 15 minutes of your attention, although allow more time for playing with the cute crabbies that are sure to distract you! Each day you need to:

Remove uneaten fresh food from the tank. Fresh food left in the tank can mold or attract pests such as ants and flies.

Check the water bowls and refill them with clean water if they need it. If the bowls are full of substrate, rinse them out and wipe them off with paper towels. Don’t use soap to clean them!

Squeeze out the sea sponge and rinse it (in dechlorinated water) until it smells clean; then place it back in the tank. If additional disinfecting is needed, let the sponge dry completely and then put it in the microwave for two minutes. (If it’s moist or damp when you put it in the microwave, it will quickly shrink to the size of a walnut.)
